What’s the First Step to Your Ideal Career or Business?

FIRST STEPS
The best way to learn is by taking action.

Becoming a career coach. My first client. Erin Sheedy. My best friend. NOW I AM a career coach!

Dream of making a physical planner: Emailing the printer.

I wanted to be a professor. I created my own experience in my resume (with my blog) and applied for a professor’s job! I teach online!

Ditch perfection.

FIRST STEPS for you to take today:

The first step if you have no idea what you want to be when you grow up.

Informational interview:

What is a typical day in the life of a ____?

Example Script

Dear (Name of Person),

I am currently an MBA student at the Rady School of Management at University of California, San Diego. My career counselor at the Rady School suggested I contact you to conduct an informational interview.

My passion and desire is to become (your career target) and your background and experience will be invaluable to me as I pursue my career. At your convenience, I would like to schedule a 15-minute informational meeting with you in person or over the phone. The purpose of the meeting is to gather additional information that will better assist me with my career decisions. Thank you for considering my request.

Thanks,

(Your Name and contact information)

*Notice how I only asked for 15 minutes of their time. Most professionals have 15 minutes to spare to help you out. But, if you ask them to meet you in person or ask for an hour of the time, you will be less likely to get a response.

The first step if you want to start a business.

Step 1: Not trying to sell. Just trying to get feedback.

Don’t need a refined offer or product. It’s about being open and honest.

Hey! I’m trying to start a business. I want to serve ___ audience and solve ___ problem. I’ll be the first to admit, I’m just starting so everything is still being finalized but I would love to interview you so I can get a little more clarity on my focus.

Step 2: I know the results I get.

The impact I have. I have testimonials and stories. I help solve problems. I understand my customers.

First step if you know what your dream job is but don’t know how to get it.

Email: “What should I do? I’m graduating. There’s no jobs. I can’t find my dream career right now because of COVID.”

I believe there’s never been a better time friend. Everyone is thinking that. This is YOUR time to get ahead. This is your time to create your resume, add your own experience. This is your time to get virtual work experience if you need it because everyone’s working from home. Businesses are struggling. They need help. If you made a pitch to a company right now, I guarantee you could get an internship or volunteer.

If you are looking for a Manager who has experience consulting and training others, please consider me as an intern position. I am a positive and energetic individual who is willing to work hard and has a strong desire to succeed. Due to my experiences and educational history, I feel that I would be an excellent intern.

I know your business may be struggling with ___ right now. I have ideas of how I can help you. I am willing to put in an unpaid internship and work ___ hours per week with whatever you need right now. All I want to do is learn and use COVID as an opportunity.

I am currently pursuing my M.B.A at the Rady School of Management at University of California San Diego and will graduate in March 2011. Through my education, I have acquired the understanding of human resources, problem solving and communications. I have also gained skills such as teamwork, leadership and project management through group projects and internships.

Furthermore, I have gained confidence in real-life business situations by consulting at Booz Allen Hamilton and studying abroad in Madrid, Spain. I feel that my positive attitude, responsibility and experience helping my client run his organization more efficiently would be beneficial in the position of Manager of Learning and Development.

Due to my educational and business experience, I believe that you will find I am well qualified. Enclosed is my resume for your review. I look forward to talking with you and learning more about SapientNitro. You may reach me at 619-555-5555. I can start this week. Thank you for your consideration.
